    M!nder: Intelligent Theft-Deterrence for Bicycles

Goals and motivation behind the project

M!nder is an Intelligent Theft-Deterrence for Bicycles. It is expected to go on sale in the Summer of 2022, initially in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

As this product did not yet have a proven market, the client was hoping for only quick work rather than a deeply contemplated creation. Still, I needed to keep in mind that the logo had to be versatile for future packaging and other aspects.

The client did not want the logo to be about theft; rather, his idea centers on the love of one’s bicycle. He was also open to anything else that might inspire the designer’s mind.

    Resources & Materials

Understanding the product and knowing the product name is crucial. However, in this case, the product name hadn’t been decided when I started, so I focused on creating a graphic signifier associated with the product and the client’s words, “love of bicycles.”

    My role in the project

As a logo designer, I developed three design concepts.

    • Inspired by cyclists’ love for bikes and cycling. Used bold shapes/lines and strong slant font to represent reliability, robustness and the feel of the wind.
    • Inspired by bicycle. The asterisk symbols represent simplified wheels and alertness, and bold fonts represent reliability and robustness.
    • Combining exclamation mark and a bike saddle. Used bold font to represent reliability and robustness. May work with or without supporting graphic of bike parts illustration.

    Result

The client loved both the text and the illustration of design A. He found the lower-case works particularly well with the exclamation mark and the ‘love’ aspect. The client also liked the illustration being dominant relative to the name.

    Children’s Early Learning Center

Goals and motivation behind the project

The client was looking for compact branding for a children’s early learning center. The target market was families with children aged 2.5 to 5 years and parents between the ages of 25 to 45 who would believe in an education that is a modern and a play-based innovative program as opposed to a strict academy. The client was also planning to prepare freshly made, to-go kids’ meals and eventually develop a kids’ kitchen for recipes to share. They needed a logo, website, and kids’ meal label/package to start the business.

The client described the center as a unique early childhood program based on modern research, love and happiness. Instead of having a structured program focused only on academics, they focused on children’s holistic learning experience that encourages comprehensive development based on modern research.

    Resources & Materials

The client provided detailed information about their business and a rough idea of what goes into the website, including the key business concepts that describe their uniqueness. I extracted the essential words from the key concepts and used them as design keywords for the logo and overall design theme for the website and package.

    My role in the project

As a logo and branding designer, I shared hand-drew diagrams at the early stage of my brainstorming to confirm how I understood the client’s key concepts and ensure the client and I were on the same page.

I came up with five logo design concepts.

    • Bouncy Seed – The bouncy seed/bean shape represents a potential to glow, full of energy and organic feel. The text at the bottom symbolizes that children can freely explore with teachers’ support.
    • Heart Monogram – The simple line art Monogram combined with “B” and heart shape represents love, happiness and an airy feel.
    • Curious Bunny – The bunny combined with the letter “Bliss” represents lively, playful, curious children.
    • Creative Bubbles – The graphic represents children’s curiosity and creativity springing up and infinite possibilities.
    • Happy Kid – The smile represents happy children with lots of curiosity and potential. The bouncy “Bliss” letter symbolizes fun and spontaneous atmosphere.

    Result

The client felt all presented logos were unique, clean and modern. They narrowed it down to three choices: A, B and C, with some minor adjustments and color experiment requests.

Once the logo was finalized, I moved on to web design, starting with creating a style tile.

I created two designs that reflect the brand image the client was aiming for; organic, happy and modern. Visitors can easily understand the centre’s value. Easy to navigate through. Open for future expansion for additional functions such as online payment.

Although I was able to complete the logo design and the presentation phase of web design, finding a physical location, hiring teachers and staff members, and getting building permission became very difficult for the client, a large part due to covid. The business was planned to be opened in late 2021 but was postponed indefinitely.

    Bootstrap’d: Online Event

Goals and motivation behind the project

The client was organizing an online event, Bootstrap West Online Summit, which was planned to be held in 2021 as a one-day micro-conference for independent software developers, makers and solopreneurs in Western Canada & USA. The organization’s core mission was to help bootstrappers build healthy lifestyles and sustainable businesses.

The client was looking for a logo in single colour or two, something that can be easily printed onto fabric within budget.

    Resources & Materials

From a style perspective, the client liked the logo I previously designed for WordCamp Vancouver.

    My role in the project

As a logo designer, I developed three design concepts.

    • Inspired by a summit of the mountain. Strong hand lettering to represent the robust Bootstrap community and healthy lifestyles.
    • Expressing the footsteps climbing up to the summit in a fun way. Since there is a possibility that the event would be held quarterly, this design could have fun with seasonal variations.
    • Taking a similar approach to the stamp effects from the logo client liked.

    Result

The client liked all concepts but most liked design A. He saw it as the most versatile and captured the feel he wanted.
